Help children realize the wonderment of discovery through hands-on learning experiences. This is a great opportunity to work with our School Program Instructors in a classroom setting. You will be involved in assisting the instructors with set-up and take-down of interpretive program materials, organizing and packing of program kits, and inspiring and motivating students at project stations through guided support.

Positions are seasonal: September to June. Special opportunities are also available to work with home school students booked into programs on select Mondays each month, as well as to assist with special themed events such as: Real People, Real Science Events, Chem Fest, Pi Day, etc.

Weekdays (Monday - Friday)

School Programs - Weekdays, Mon to Fri: 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as per bookings (morning and/or afternoon shift)
Home School Days - One Monday/Month: 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. as per bookings (morning and/or afternoon shifts)
Special Themed Events - Various weekdays - 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as per event (morning and/or afternoon shifts)

Field trips to visit us are awesome! As an official host for visiting schools, you will welcome and usher these groups to their scheduled program activities. Learning destinations include the IMAX Theatre, Zeidler Dome planetarium, themed exhibit galleries, interpretive science classrooms, etc. Positions are seasonal: September to June.

Tour Guides play an important role in The Works Art & Design Festival on Churchill Square. They allow festival patrons to experience the festival and art exhibits in an accessible way, encouraging reflection, dialogue, and a motivation for patrons to learn more about contemporary and local art.

The Works Art & Design Festival is the most unique, free event of its kind. It attracts artists, designers and patrons from around the world – boosting the city’s energy and imagination at the start of each summer. The 2023 Festival dates are July 7th-July 16.

Tour Guide volunteers conduct a 1-1.5 hour engaging tour of the festival and art exhibits with members of the public. This position requires attendance to a TArt (Training in Art interpretation) session, provided for free by The Works.

This is a great role for volunteers looking to develop public speaking skills or to learn more in-depth about contemporary and local art and art interpretation, visual arts students wishing to expand art interpretation skills, or any community member looking for an introduction into the arts. As tours can be conducted with a single tour guide, or in pairs, this is a great position for those looking to volunteer together.

Tour guides must be available for a minimum of 2.5 consecutive hours. This is needed to ensure that tour guides have enough time to gather patrons for a tour, conduct the tour and return to Festival Site (Churchill Square). Outside of the minimum of 2.5 consecutive hours, this can be flexible

The Works Patio is an all-ages area that allows the sale of alcoholic beverages to visitors over the age of 18 and includes musical performances on the Works Street Stage. Patio Bar staff exchange drink tickets for cash/card, uphold AGLC rules, and serve Alcohol to festival Patrons. Depending on the amount of patrons, cashier and server duties may be split.
This role requires a valid Pro-Serve however, The Works may be able to assist in getting your Pro-Serve. Email or call us to learn more!

Greeters are the first face patrons see on the Square! This role entails being stationed in pairs at each entrance of Churchill Square to greet the public, answer questions, and most importantly count patrons as they enter and leave the festival grounds with a mechanical counter.

The Patio Gate Attendants are responsible for counting patrons as they enter and leave specific gates to ensure compliance with AGLC regulations. These volunteers also assist in ensuring AGLC rules are followed by ensuring no alcoholic drinks leave the Patio and general Patio rules are followed. Patio gate volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to apply.

Photographers play an integral role in The Works Art & Design Festival, using their skilled eyes to capture special moments and memories we can share with the world. As a volunteer photographer you document North America’s largest free outdoor art and design festival.

The Works Art & Design Festival is the most unique, free event of its kind. It attracts artists, designers and patrons from around the world – boosting the city’s energy and imagination at the start of each summer. Free to the public, The Works strives to create barrier free access to art and design. The 2023 Festival dates are July 7th-July 16.

Photographers must bring and use their own DSLR camera and attend The Works free photography orientation. Photographers experienced with crowd photography are encouraged to apply, though this is not necessary.

Duties include:
-Roam the festival grounds and capture the magic that is The Works festival.

-Solicit consent forms when taking recognizable photos of individuals.

-Managing data: labeling, sorting and transferring files to The Works staff or computers.

-Follow a shot list to take photos requested by the marketing department and photography team lead.

-Properly crediting artwork that appears in photographs.

Are you interested in furthering your leadership skills? Do you want to use your personal knowledge and skills for a good cause? Come and be a part of our educational and activity-based T.A.N.G. Summer Camps!

Take part in our Youth Program and become a mentor for multicultural youths in the community! Our program aims to help youth (11-15 years old) make healthy and safe choices through workshops and recreational activities. Some of the activities include sports, crafts, interesting workshops on current youth issues, volunteering in the community, teambuilding activities, and much, much more!

Summer camp rums from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm from July 4 - July 14, and August 8 - August 18 (Overnight Camp from August 17-18 at Strathcona Wilderness Centre)

Family Programs Assistants assist the Family Programing Coordinator who comes up with different engaging crafts and activities for kids and families. Duties include encouraging fun and creativity for all patrons. This also includes doing art with families, encouraging patrons to be creative, ensuring a tidy space and that art supplies are not running low. While artists are encouraged to apply, it is not a requirement. Volunteers 18+ require references and may be subject to a Vulnerable Person’s Check.

Grounds maintenance volunteers keep the outdoor site of The Works Art & Design festival environmentally friendly and attractive for all patrons to enjoy. Volunteers are supplied with PPE such as gloves, bags with a long handle, and a Reacher grabber tool.

The Volunteer administration position is an important role in The Works Art & Design festival as they assist the volunteer coordinator prior, during, and after the festival depending on volunteer availability. While duties will differ day to day, it involves the more administrative side of the festival, assisting with volunteer sign-ins, relieving volunteers for breaks, and in general an extra pair of helping hands.

This role is great for volunteers who are looking for more flexibility, developing administration skills, and are available prior to the festival dates. Ideally, these volunteers should have a high degree of familiarity with the festival and can be trusted with responsibilities that are above and beyond those required of other positions.

As this is a trusted position, a reference and/or familiarity with The Works is required.
