Emerging Leaders Program
Launched in 2011, the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a U of A student leadership program structured around a social change model of leadership. The ELP views leadership as a “purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change” (Komives et al., 2009, p. 50). The ELP is jointly planned and facilitated by student services’ professionals from across the University of Alberta and Students' Union.
In this program, students engage in a series of workshops on topics such as collaboration, conflict resolution, self-discovery, change and citizenship. Students who successfully complete the program can receive a non-credit certificate.

What are the time commitments?
The program involves participating in 3 full day workshops from 10:00AM to 5:00PM on the University of Alberta's North Campus. This year, participants will join one of two cohorts to complete the program.
What do the workshops look like?
Each workshop is structured in a way to accommodate and challenge people of all learning styles. There are lecture components, personal reflections, group activities, videos, and interactive, engaging discussions between participants and facilitators.
What does each workshop cover?
The Emerging Leaders Program is split up into 3 days which cover the main concepts of the Social Change Model of Leadership. They are split as follows:
Session 1: Personal Leadership:
Engage in self-assessment, reflection, hear from community leaders on congruency and explore motivation through the lens of leadership.
Session 2: Group Leadership
Enhance awareness of group development process, gain skills to navigate team building, and practice coaching individuals.
Session 3: Community Leadership
Explore dynamics of conflict, learn how to have difficult conversations, and explore approaches to create social change.
What are the costs?
The cost for the North Campus program is $75 for current undergraduate students, and $150 for current graduate students. These fees will go to help partially cover the cost of the program materials, food and events.

What if I cannot afford the program?
If you are a current undergraduate student, the Students' Union offers a limited number of full and partial bursaries to students who demonstrate financial need. You will have the option to apply for these bursaries as part of your application form.
Who can apply for this program?
All University of Alberta students can apply for this program. The program will focus on development of skills and knowledge for new or emerging student leaders. Additionally, undergraduate students from post-secondary institutions in Alberta can attend for $150.
