Alberta Student Leadership Summit

ASLS 2023

ASLS is a one-day, nationwide leadership conference being held on October 21, 2023. It is open to both high school and post-secondary students -- from anywhere! This conference strives to be an accessible leadership development opportunity that builds skills, grows community, and inspires action.

We focus our leadership practices at individual, group, and community levels through seeking an understanding of our purpose as leaders. This involves forming a mindful response to the onrush of complex leadership challenges we encounter in our everyday social contexts, news feeds, and personal experiences. Responding requires thoughtfully addressing underlying leadership challenges to inform meaningful approaches to being leaders.

The ASLS 2023 theme is Seeds for Change which highlights the need for lasting change through strong foundations being put in place for a better future. While understanding the importance of hope and equity, Seeds for Change acknowledges the work beginning now to see a payoff in the future.

Want to volunteer with ASLS?

Applications have now closed for ASLS 2023. Please stay on the lookout for volunteer opportunities for October's summit!

For 2023, sessions will cover topics in four streams:

Sustainability: Sustainability is more than just the environment! This stream will focus on the four pillars of sustainability (social, human, economic, and environmental) to ensure that we are uplifting all areas of our world in a sustainable way.

Community Organizing: Change starts at the community level! In this stream, you will hear from community organizers involved in different issues that affect their communities and how they took the steps to start organizing to change those issues.

Governance: Are you ready to start making big decisions for your communities? Getting involved in governance at any level is integral to creating long lasting and meaningful change. This stream will focus on why you should be involved in governance at any level and how to effect change through government structures.

Leadership Fundamentals: What does it mean to be a leader? In this stream, we will focus on developing skills and attitudes towards leadership that empower students to practise leadership in their own communities. Leadership is a collection of skills that can be taught, practised, and implemented in every day life.

ASLS Certificates

By attending the Summit, students will have opportunities to earn digital certificates to include on their resumes, CVs and LinkedIn! Attendees that attend at least 5 sessions throughout the week of the Summit (regardless of stream) will receive an ASLS 2023 Certificate to verify their presence at the Summit! Delegates can earn this certificate for both the virtual section and in-person section of ASLS 2023!

ASLS: Planned by students, for students.

We believe that students are the best people to decide what students want to see in a student leadership conference; that's why we have a team of students who direct the conference. The directors take on roles from setting the schedule to coordinating volunteers.
