Description:

The Recreation Therapy team at Sprucewood Place Housing Community is looking for volunteers to assist in recreation therapy programming! This is a perfect opportunity for individuals interested in the field of Recreational Therapy, wanting to help others, or looking to learn more about health care facilities.

A premier Park Place care residence located in the community of Edmonton AB, Sprucewood Place offers both Independent Living and Designated Supportive Living (DSL), including specialized suites for mental rehabilitation residents and adults with special disability requirements. Recognized for its inclusive care services and close proximity to Royal Alexandra Hospital, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and downtown Edmonton, Sprucewood Place Housing Community combines unique social events with the comfort and services that provide a cozy and welcoming environment to call home.

Sprucewood Place provides Designated Supportive Living for 93 residents with physical challenges and mental health needs. Our facility is located near Kingsway Mall, at 11418 97 Street NW.

Volunteer Opportunities:
• Assisting Therapy staff with facilitation of Recreation programs (e.g. Bingo, crafts, music, exercise)
• Assisting Therapy staff with special events (e.g. birthdays, entertainment)
• 1:1 visits
• Portering residents to and from programs
• Assisting with community outings

Volunteer Requirements:
All volunteers must be screened for the safety of our residents and staff. To become a volunteer, you must:
1. Fill out a volunteer application form
2. Interview with Recreation Therapist/Volunteer Coordinator
3. Complete a Vulnerable Sectors Check

Qualifications:

Qualifications:
• Able to commit 25 hours or more within a year
• Sensitive to the needs of residents with physical challenges, mental health needs, and cognitive decline
• Reliable and punctual
• Be willing to work under the guidance and direction of a supervisor(s)
• 14 years and older (parental consent required for those under 18)


Training:

New volunteers will be oriented to the facility and to programs/areas of interest by Recreation Therapist and/or Therapy Aides. A volunteer checklist will be issued prior to commencing volunteering.
