Abner Monteiro VP Academic

Abner Monteiro is your UASU Vice President Academic for the 2021-22 academic year. He is a Kinesiology student with a passion for student governance and exercise science. Over his degree, Abner has immersed himself in the University of Alberta community. He has participated in student governance at various levels, including General Faculties Council (GFC), Students' Council and as President of the Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation Student Society (KSRSS). His passion for motor learning has led him to research perceptual-motor behaviour and promote health and wellness both inside and outside of the University of Alberta community. Abner strives to advocate and make tangible changes that better the lives of those around him.

During his term, Abner hopes to promote open educational resources by creating a zero textbook cost indicator program, modernize the University’s policies around assessment and grading, create a more inclusive space for collaboration amongst student leaders, and implement an experiential learning policy that protects students on practica. Beyond this, he hopes to consistently engage with the student body and address any concerns students have about their academic experience at the University of Alberta.

Outside of governance, you can find Abner on the basketball court, in the kitchen, or sharing his love for kinesiology with those around him. He actively engages both on and off-campus, including his participation as the Head Academic Coordinator of the 2022 Kinesiology Games Conference, a Week of Welcome volunteer, a youth basketball coach, and an intramurals enthusiast. Above all else, he is honoured and privileged to serve as your Vice President Academic this year and fight for the issues most important to you.
