Emerging Leaders Program

Launched in 2011, the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a U of A student leadership program structured around a social change model of leadership. The ELP views leadership as a “purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change” (Komives et al., 2009, p. 50). The ELP is jointly planned and facilitated by student services’ professionals from across the University of Alberta and Students' Union.

In this program, students engage in a series of workshops on topics such as collaboration, conflict resolution, self-discovery, change and citizenship. Students who successfully complete the program can receive a non-credit certificate.

Hear from other students!

“Participating in the Emerging Leaders Program served as a foundational experience in my journey with conceptualizing and participating in leadership at the UofA. The design and delivery of the program was engaging and well-paced for an introductory yet comprehensive three-day curriculum. Through this opportunity, I connected with students that also had an interest in developing their own capacity for leadership; a truly dynamic network of individuals with a variety of different leadership experiences and skills from which I was able to learn informally alongside the formal teachings of this program.”

ELP is a wonderful program that helped me reflect on and improve my mindset and leadership skills. There are lots of interactive teamwork pieces that you participate in throughout the program that help strengthen your collaboration and critical thinking skills. I met many incredible people during my time with ELP and the facilitators do a great job at creating a welcoming environment for you to thrive in! Would highly recommend this program!

"The Emerging Leaders Program offered an opportunity to deep dive into concepts of leadership which enhanced my understanding of what leadership is and how we take part in this concept of "leadership". Not only did I gain enhanced understanding of leadership, but also getting to connect and collaborate with various campus community members had broadened my connection and understanding of the UAlberta community. I highly encourage everyone to take part in the Emerging Leaders Program during their time at the University of Alberta."
