Most students at the University are considered residents of Alberta for the purpose of applying for student loans. If you are an Alberta resident but going to school in a diffferent province you still apply for Alberta student loans. The Alberta Students' Finance Board is responsible for making applications available to students, and assessing applications and appeals, as well as distributing funds.

What can I do online?

By visiting the Alberta Learning Information Services website, you can access:

  • Electronic application forms, such as a Change of Circumstance or Power of Attorney forms
  • Check application status and view award assessment
  • Change your address
  • Access information regarding student loans

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant) or a convention refugee with protected persons status
  • Be an Alberta resident (have lived in Alberta for 12 months consecutively without being a full-time post-secondary student)
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student (60% of a full credit load) at an approved post-secondary institution, like the University of Alberta
  • Pass a credit check - if applying for the first time at the age 22 or over
  • Demonstrate financial need

Spring and Summer Session

  • Funding is available for Spring and Summer sessions. You must fill out the same loan application papers that were available for the previous academic year.
  • It takes 4 to 6 weeks for your application to be assessed and you must have your loan papers signed by the last day of study. Since this period is so short we strongly recommend students to apply early.
