Exchanges
If you are interested in going on an exchange please visit the University of Alberta International website for more information.
-
An exchange is when you take courses at another post-secondary institution through the University of Alberta. Your tuition will go to the University of Alberta and to no other institution.
-
If you are going on an exchange and need funding, you have to fill out a Student Loan application form as well as a Schedule 3, which is included in the application package. In filling out the Schedule 3, your Home Educational Institution is the University of Alberta. You should also include documentation such as a letter confirming that you are going on exchange.
-
Students are still bound by the $13300 a year loan limit. This can include the Students Finance Board (SFB) funding of return airfare. If you do not ask for a flight to be covered, the SFB will not provide it.
-
A summer exchange program fewer than 12 weeks long, which is not mandatory for a student, does not allow a student to receive more funding than he/she would at home. For example, if the student is a dependent, living at home with parents, he/she would not be eligible for more than $362 a month on the exchange.
-
If allowable costs exceed the loan maximum, the student may look into scholarships and bursaries as well as student lines of credit. The student may have to prove to the SFB that he/she has the means to go on the exchange, or student loan funding will be denied completely.
-
In order to cash a loan while out of the country, the student will need to give Power of Attorney to someone. Power of Attorney forms can be picked up from the Student Financial Aid Information Centre and will need to be signed by a Commissioner for Oaths. The individual with power of attorney should be able to have the student's loan signed by the Registrar’s Office (3rd Floor Administration Building) and processed by a designated post-office or Edulinx representative.
-
For the Cortona Program, a Schedule 3 must still be completed with the loan application. Tuition will not be the same a regular University of Alberta tuition. For information on costs, please pick up the Cortona Calendar at the Faculty of Arts office on the 6th Floor of the Humanities Centre.
