Cheers

Orientation Cheers

Cheers and chants have been a part of Orientation at the University of Alberta for decades. Cheers are one way for faculties to express their pride and enthusiasm. While many cheers stick around for years, new ones are added to a faculty's repertoire every year through the contribution of new incoming students and different volunteers. Some of the cheers are linked to professional traditions, while others are parodies of popular songs - some cheers you might even recognize from camp when you were a kid. All of these cheers must be vetted by the Orientation staff to ensure that they are appropriate, inclusive, and most of all, fun.

After a series of events in previous years that connected Orientations across the country to unseemly behaviour, the University of Alberta Orientation program combed through the current cheer songbook and asked students to change the cheers to reflect the values of our program and of our institution. After consulting with our volunteer base, we are proud to offer cheers that are inclusive but that still retain their energy and volume. Cheers are meant to be enjoyable, so if you don't want to cheer, don't! There are lots of other ways to take part in the Orientation experience. Cheers are mostly used at the annual Presidents' Address, and it can get pretty loud, so your Orientation Leaders will teach you your cheers in preparation for that event.

Some faculties' cheers, or variations of them, can be heard at social events throughout the year. Most, though, are unique to the Orientation program. So Orientation is your chance to express your pride in being a bear, being a member of your faculty, and to be loud and proud to be at UAlberta!
