Physical Activity and Wellness (PAW) Centre
The PAW Centre will be a new physical activity and wellness facility (of almost 111,000 sq. ft.) with program components including a campus fitness centre, a world-class climbing centre, a variety of student service spaces and a new home for The Steadward Centre.
The project is a partnership with stakeholders that include the Students’ Union (SU), Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) and the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation (FPER). It was approved by a student referendum on March 2010.
The centre will be constructed as an addition on the south side of the Van Vliet Centre East Wing. The PAW Centre project is targeting a Green Globe™ rating of Four Globes. The project will include a new social street, which will provide an interior connection between multiple buildings. The facility will be open to students, faculty, staff and the community.
A ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony was held on campus on November 5, 2012; a media release, with photos of the event, is available here.
Construction is currently underway. The Centre is scheduled to open toward the end of 2014.
